But somehow, a lot happened! Over the past several weeks, so many things went down! Here’s the Cliff’s Notes version:
1. Pickle Jubilee is on the shelves (several shelves!)! And we’re proud of our progress at this point! We are now available in five stores, two delivery services, and of course online! We do still hand-deliver to friends and family, but soon enough we won’t need to do that anymore. We even published a comprehensive list of “Where to Find Us” on our website!
2. We’re [almost] famous! Through the magic of email and distant connections, we have landed some sort of feature in Southern Living! That’s right, SOUTHERN LIVING! At their request, we have shipped samples to Birmingham (SL’s home base) and we expect to see some beautiful photography and on-page credit soon! Meanwhile, we’ve caught the attention of our local media. Best of New Orleans wrote a sweet little number on us, we had a nice mention in The Advocate, and we’re most excited about catching the eye of a beautiful local magazine called FACE, with whom we landed the April cover spot! We had interviews, a big photo shoot, the whole bit. We felt like royalty. Pickle royalty, that is.
3. The time has come for the big career leap! Most entrepreneurs have ended up at the point when it’s time to step away from the full time traditional nine-to-five job and into running their own business (which sounds like it will be more than full-time). Well, we’re there, and I (Abigail) had to make the big, scary (but exhilarating) leap. It was bittersweet, but my bosses and coworkers at BBR Creative couldn’t have been cooler about it. They were appropriately sad, of course (and even threw me a “You’re-Leaving-to-Pickle-and-We’re-Bitter-About-It themed party), but ultimately excited for us. I did give a two-month notice and will be staying on for one client through July, so that may have helped soften the blow. If anyone is feeling close to this point, I do recommend reading Do Cool Sh*t: Quit Your Day Job, Start Your Own Business, and Live Happily Ever After by Miki Agrawal. It’s an inspiring read.
So we will try to blog more often, but sometimes we’re like…
we can relate.
Well friends, it’s been awhile since we’ve blogged. That’s because we’ve been busy girls! Here’s the long story short:
1. We were approved by DHH and received our official manufacturing/resale permits!
2. We’re pickling till the cows come home (whatever that even means!)
3. We had the busiest Christmas season ever! (close to 1,000 of this, that and everything!)
4. And last but not least, our Pickle Jubilee was OFFICIALLY accepted into Whole Foods!
That’s right, WHOLE FOODS!!!! Whew! We are still pinching ourselves, and this is just the beginning! We will debut in a brand new store that will open on Broad Street in New Orleans in an area that is undergoing an exciting revitalization. This particular Whole Foods is a part of a really neat initiative called the ReFresh Project that will provide access to high-quality fresh foods to an underserved area as well as a much-needed boost to the local economy. There’s a term called the “Whole Foods affect,” and it’s a good thing. Here’s more if you want to read about it. We’re proud to be involved! And we’re humbled to have such esteemed beginnings for our beloved Pickle Jubilee! The Broad Street store opens on February 4th, so we’re bracing ourselves for what we hope will be an overwhelming success!
We were so excited to be invited (we were one of only six vendors) to participate in the Broad Street staff orientation on Jan. 21st. We had the privilege of presenting to more than 150 new employees as well as regional staff members and the leadership team. This was invaluable to us, because they are the folks who will be selling our product(s)! So of course we turned up the Southern Louisiana charm as high as we could, and shpeeled our story what felt like at least 300 times. And if we do say so ourselves, they loved us (and our pickles)! We think Pickle Jubilee speaks for itself, but it’s so rewarding to have that face-to-face interaction and give people a very real connection to what they’re tasting. “The Gumbo of pickles,” we said, “every pickle-lover’s dream come true,” we (pretty much) yelled! We weren’t shy, that’s for sure.
Whole Foods will open at least eight more stores over the next year (two more in Louisiana – Lafayette and Shreveport) and they want to take us along for the ride! Of course it’ll all depend on our sales, but we have a hunch…And to think, Pickle Jubilee is just ONE of our products!
